Jernhusen describes Kungsbrohuset as one of the world’s most environmentally-smart buildings, certified according to Green Building, P-marking (RISE) and Miljöklassat Hus. The environmentally smart solutions at Kungsbrohuset reduce the energy consumption by nearly half compared to the rules and regulations stipulated by the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning (Boverket). For example, the excess energy generated by 200,000 or so people who visit Stockholm Central Station each day is used to heat the building.

Our challenge, was to work with the architects to find a design solution for the glass sections of the facade that would be compatible with the building’s certifications.

The facade consists of two shells with facade blinds in the middle. Stage 1 involved competing the inner shell and quickly protecting the building from wind, rain, etc. The modules of the inner shell consist of 3-layer insulating glass with warm edges that conduct neither heat nor cold. The U-value is in the range of 0.60 to 0-65, which is below the requirements. The middle zone is 5°C higher, which can be compared to a mini greenhouse. The sealed sections of the facade consist of screen-printed glass and transparent sunscreen glass with a G-value of 0.35. Due to its location beside the train station, the facade must also offer noise protection that does not exceed 48 dB.
