The new Scandic Landvetter is an international airport hotel accessed directly from the Landvetter passenger terminal. It is a modernized terminal building with a facade clad with 1,308 flags on embossed sheets of aluminium, creating a unique and truly international atmosphere. Wingårdhs firm of architects was responsible for the design and architecture, with Gert Wingårdh as Principal Architect.
For this project, Fasadglas designed, delivered and installed a unique suspended ceiling printed on 2-layer polycarbonate plates displaying all the flags of the world and illuminated. The main challenges were to minimize the weight and come up with a solution whereby technicians could open it up for service. The regulated lighting also needed to shine through the plates in the right way.
Lighting was also a key aspect for representing the true colours of each flag, while hiding the underlying luminaires. Each flag was printed on plastic using advanced UV-technology, exactly like what is used when printing on glass.
Flags are to me the ultimate symbol of international business. For travelling, meetings and cross-border interactions.
